AFFORD One Stop Shop Starts Operations
Despite the existence of numerous outlets that provide medical care and services, many of Uganda’s 31 million people still lack access to quality health care and continuous availability of basic health care products and services. The opening of the AFFORD Pharmacy in April 2008 has transformed the face of health care provision in Uganda. .
The AFFORD Pharmacy is a model “one stop shop” which demonstrates the standards expected in health retail outlets and provides essential products and services, including pharmaceutical and allied health products sourced locally as well as through direct importation. Also on offer at the AFFORD Pharmacy are personal hygiene products, VCT services, and information on commonly encountered ailments like malaria, diarrhoea, and HIV/AIDS.
The first AFFORD Pharmacy, located in Luzira, is managed by a team of professional staff and headed by a qualified pharmacist.
With the successful opening and operation of the first AFFORD Pharmacy, others are scheduled to be opened in different regional capitals. It is expected that this will evolve into a franchise to which existing and new retail outlets can apply to join.
